Why Corporate Cultures Copy Each Other (Why it's Dangerous)

09th, June, 2026

Why Corporate Cultures Copy Each Other (and Why It’s Dangerous): It is about the same trend being followed by the majority of professionals and differs from innovation, adoption, and the latest trends in corporate culture. A blog by Audrey Agapov

In principle‚ innovation must thrive on difference and competition‚ but in practice organizations are quite similar? Offices and workplaces often contain hierarchies and corporate jargon, which are all structures that organizations seem to share, either by design or default. Furthermore, it suggests a social process where organizations privilege legitimacy over originality?

In sociology it was called organizational isomorphism: uncertain market conditions were seen as leading to mimicry‚ as copying the behavior of other firms showing success was a rational way of reducing the uncertainty faced by the organization? Adopting the culture of a successful company shows competence to investors‚ employees‚ and the public‚ even if the culture is not necessarily appropriate for that particular organization?

From a social-anthropological perspective‚ corporate culture can be interpreted as a ritual system‚ and corporate language‚ meetings‚ and the rules for business conduct are symbols of belonging? While these things promote a united team‚ they suppress disagreement? Employees quickly learn the ideas that align with the dominant narrative?

This raises the issue that copying may be confused with restructuring‚ becoming a series of incremental changes rather than focusing substantially on reorganization? Over time‚ firms become less flexible and develop structures that look modern yet are slow to adapt? Real innovation is not a question of copying the visible trappings of success‚ but of asking whether common practices serve the organisation's aims?
